Open Arms Care is a well respected and growing non-profit organization offering a variety of services to help individuals with MR and development disabilities reach their maximum potential through life skills development, vocational services, recreational therapies and community integration. OAC provides individuals with developmental disabilities homes and working environments in which they can take ownership and pride. They actively participate in the routine and responsibilities of their own lives. They grow and experience the joys of life. We provide all of this in the safety and security of a supportive environment.

About OAC

The house on the winding lane overlooking the Tennessee countryside looks like most others in the neighborhood. A basketball goal in the driveway and attractive landscaping indicate a family presence.

On the wall in the front great room, small, framed portraits tell the story of the family that lives there – eight individuals with varying degrees of mental retardation and developmental disabilities. OAC works in partnership with our clients’ families to meet the extraordinary medical needs, constant supervision and social and emotional support those who live there need.

This home is one of 32 Intermediate Care Facility/Mental Retardation (ICF/MR) community homes operated by OAC in Chattanooga, Knoxville, Memphis, and Nashville along with a day program for our clients in each city. Our homes provide a safe, secure and stable family-like environment and:
  • Are located in a residential setting
  • Serve eight people
  • Are staffed with qualified mental retardation professionals, registered nurses and licensed practical nurses
  • Provide 24-hour a day supervision, health care services and room and board in a home-like setting
Services Offered

From daily hygiene routines to meal planning, preparation and clean up, our clients are encouraged to participate in daily living chores at their home, based on their ability levels.

Each individual shares a room and bath with one other client. Each bedroom reflects the personalities of its residents. One may have sports posters, another family pictures, and yet another, cherished keepsakes.

For breakfast, the group gathers in the dining room, at a table set with attractive placemats and napkins. Those who are able to assist in serving and cleaning up do so. The nutritious breakfast gets their day off to a great start. Then transportation is provided to each for the business of the day - school, work or a specialized day program - depending on each individual’s personalized plan. At day’s end, the clients return home for dinner and leisure time. Some may choose to watch TV in the den, spend time exercising, or retire to their room for some quiet time.
