$75,208.64 - $87,063.41 annually

The Superior Court in Contra Costa County is recruiting Court Reporters on a continuous basis.  An eligibility list will be maintained as a result of this recruitment and will be used to fill authorized positions as they become available. 

 

Court Reporters are expected to be available to work in any court department at any of the court locations, which include Martinez, Richmond, Walnut Creek, Pittsburg and Concord.  Individuals appointed to permanent positions will be required to provide and use a CAT system that is enabled for real time reporting AND must provide real time reporting services upon request for any court related need. Persons appointed who possess the CRR automatically qualify for a 10% salary differential ($82,729.50 - $95,769.75 annual equivalent).  Persons appointed who pass the local “Basic Readability” test automatically qualify for a 5% salary differential ($78,969.07 - $91,416.59 annual equivalent). 

 

Actual salary at time of appointment will depend on the selected individual’s experience and/or job-related qualifications. Court Reporters must provide and maintain their own reporting and transcription equipment.

 

Typical tasks of a Court Reporter include:

 

·          record verbatim testimony of all court proceedings using stenographic and computer aided transcription equipment and real time software; ask judge and other speakers for clarification of testimony instructions, orders and actions to ensure accurate record;

·          prepare and read back all, and/or portions of the official court proceedings upon instruction from the  judge;

·      prepare and maintain printed steno notes and magnetic media of all testimony and proceedings and provide copies as requested by the court for storage purposes;

·        prepare and certify written transcripts using computer aided transcription software; prepare daily transcripts as needed;

·          receive and respond promptly to requests to produce transcripts; estimate cost of transcripts; prepare and deliver transcripts on an individual contractor basis and bill separately pursuant to established statutory guidelines;

·          prepare and deliver all court-mandated appeal transcripts and extensions within statutory timeframes, formatted in conformance with statutory requirements;

·          maintain a variety of electronic and paper files; archive court reports and transcripts; organize and ensure official records security; and

·          provide court reporter services in other departments and courtrooms countywide when regularly assigned court is not in session; or due to operational necessity.

License Requirement:

 

Possession and maintenance of a valid license as a Certified Shorthand Reporter (CSR) in the State of California.  Previous court and real time experience is desirable.

Applicants must complete and submit a court application to the Court’s Executive Office.  A copy of your Certified Shorthand Reporter certificate must be submitted with your application.  A cover letter and resume may also be submitted, but they may not substitute for the required employment application. Once a candidate’s name is placed on the employment eligibility list, his or her name may remain on the list for up to ONE YEAR.  After the one year period of eligibility, he or she must reapply and repeat participation in the selection process in order to maintain employment eligibility.

 

Court transfers: A court reporter appointed on or after January 1, 2007, may receive credit (for vacation accrual purposes only) for continuous permanent service time with another court immediately prior to his or her appointment to the Contra Costa Superior Court. The Court Executive Officer or designee will, at his or her sole discretion, determine whether service credit will be provided.

 

Note:     Each individual appointed to a court reporter position will be required to successfully            

              complete a criminal history check conducted by the Sheriff’s Department.
