Position Description
 

The Superior Court of California, County of Imperial, is seeking a highly motivated and professional individual to perform the duties of a certified Court Interpreter.

 

Provides verbal interpretations of questions, testimony, arguments and other courtroom proceedings for defendants, judges, counsel, jurors, witnesses and others; translate written materials and legal documents in the courtroom.

 

· Attend civil and criminal hearings, trials and other proceedings to interpret verbal testimony, questions arguments, verdicts and other proceedings in a court of law.

· Provide interpreter services at a wide variety of court-related activities including but not limited to arraignment, hearings, plea bargaining, penalties, bail review, probation violation, sentencing, mental competency hearings, adoptions, restraining order hearings and other proceedings.

· Translate written materials and documents including sight translations.

· Assure that defendants, counsel, judges, witnesses, and others have a clear and accurate translation of verbal interaction and written materials involved in court proceedings.

· Travel to branch courts as needed to provide interpreter services.

· Translate and interpret legal documents, slang expressions and street language.

 

 

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of:

· Legal procedures and terminology.

· Oral and written communication skills.

· Correct oral and written usage of English.

· Correct oral and written usage of Spanish.

· Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

· Simultaneous, consecutive and sight translation techniques.

· Translation of street language including slang, profanity and colloquialisms.

· Code of ethics and rules of confidentiality applicable to interpreting.

 

 

Education and experience:

Any combination equivalent for requirements set by the State of California for Certified Court Interpreters.

 

 

Licenses and other requirements:

Valid California driver’s license.

Requires State of California Certification as a Court Interpreter
